The Amazing Spider-Man 2 viral site, The Daily Bugle, has been entertaining Spidey fans with speculation as to what villains might lurk on the fringe of Marc Webb’s expanding universe. Puma, The Enforcers and the Shocker have all been hinted at (even if we don’t believe they’ll actually make it into Webb’s sequel). Now Sony’s putting the emphasis back on a villain we KNOW will be in May’s movie: Electro, as played by Jamie Foxx.

The new international posters for Spider-Man 2 were shared by various sources (Digital Spy, IGN and Oleg Gaiko’s Twitter feed), and they pit Spider-Man (Andrew Garfield) against his electrical nemesis, notably in the Times Square battle. Take a look at the other two one-sheets.

Spider-Man Times Square

And that Times Square battle I just mentioned was showcased during ABC’s New Year’s Eve countdown. In case you missed it, we have it here:

Despite the presence of the Rhino (Paul Giamatti) and a Goblin (Dane DeHaan) – though maybe not THE Green Goblin – Webb has been saying that Electro is his main villain, and these posters serve to remind us that Foxx will help carry ASM 2 as he locks horns with Garfield’s web-slinger. And that has been the case since Comic-Con, when Sony launched a marketing campaign centered around the villain’s arrival in San Diego.

And there likely will be plenty more as we build up to the May 2 release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2. There has been a lot of conversation about the future of Sony’s Spider-Man series, with talk of The Sinister Six and spots for Venom or Carnage. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. Let’s settle in for Electro, learn about the rise and fall of Max Dillon, and see where this cinematic antagonist fits into the growing tapestry that is the Spider-Man universe.
