Keira Knightley Quitting Acting?

By Josh Tyler: 2007-05-03 04:00:16
Keira Knightley Quitting Acting? Every month or so we get a story like this, where some major Hollywood actress threatens or promises to quit acting forever. Astute Hollywood hounds might remember for instance, Cate Blanchett’s promised retirement from movies four years ago. She’s made at least a dozen films since then. Or what about Gwenyth Paltrow, who promised to quit acting to raise her Apple. That lasted about six months.

So here’s the latest one. John over at The Movie Blog has picked up a story from the BBC News in which uber-hottie Keria Knightley whines about all the pressure being rich, famous, and drop dead gorgeous has put her under. She is considering quitting acting and says, “I think I just have to move away or give it up altogether.”

What really spins my head about this story, isn’t her empty threat which we know she’ll never follow through on, but the fact that what prompted the outburst from her in the first place is that she’s being featured as a poster girl on pro-anorexia websites. Ok, first… there are pro-anorexia websites? What the hell? Who thinks starving yourself to death is a good idea? I’d love to know what sort of bizarre logic they’re using to make it sound like a good idea. Note to big tobacco: You need these people on your PR staff.

Second, I can understand why it might make her upset. Actually, the fact that it makes her upset is sort of a mark in her favor. She’s still a human being. I can’t imagine say, Paris Hilton giving two shits about something like this. So please note Keira, I am now stalking you. Thanks for being so cool. She says she’s naturally thin and doesn’t want to be a scapegoat “or promoting a mental illness."

I seriously doubt she’ll actually quit. And if she does, she’ll be back. Nobody ever really leaves Hollywood, except Paul Newman who has gotten so caught up in the world of salad dressings that he just doesn’t have time for it, or Sean Connery who is almost dead anyway so it doesn’t really matter. Keira however, has yet to figure this simple fact of celebrity out. She’ll quit for a day, start craving the attention, and go right back to being topless in every non-pirate movie she’s in just to make sure she has your full attention.

  • Jason: Doubt it, she's just adressing her opinion. The pointlessness of your post is so pathetic, it's laughable. Same with the pointlessness of mine.
  • Well obviously you do since you bothered to respond to this article.
  • Eh, who cares? Has Keira done anything besides the Pirate trilogy, honestly? Heck, she and Orlando are so bland in those films that they could be replaced by any hot-n-pretty and noone would blink an eye.

I like that she's human enough to care about the pro-anorexia sites. I'll give her that. But wouldn't making some PSAs about the disease be more efficient than simply running away?
