Melissa McCarthy Takes An Awkward, Foul-Mouthed Field Trip For Tammy Trailer
Director Ben Falcone and the members of Team Tammy really love this fast-food-robbing scene, don’t they? I mean, it’s the focal point of the latest trailer for the upcoming summer comedy. And it was pretty much all that we were treated to in the comedy’s first trailer, which Warner Bros. and New Line Cinemas dropped online a few weeks back:
Is this all that there is? Will this be a Compliance-level comedy, contained to the greasy walls of the Topper Jacks eatery? Thankfully, no, and the newest trailer for Tammy takes Melissa McCarthy out of the paper bag and places her behind the wheel for a road trip with her grandmother (played by Susan Sarandon), then asks her to do all sorts of Melissa McCarthy things. These include – but are not limited to – dancing to a popular song, swearing, and dancing while swearing. Where have we seen that before?
The new Tammy clip (shared via ABC’s Good Morning America) establishes a bit more of the plot, though the premise still strikes me as being a bit thin. Melissa McCarthy and Susan Sarandon end up in a car together, and they are heading to Niagara Falls, creating chaos along the way as they learn a bit more about each other… and a bit more about themselves. When you put it that way, it sounds a LOT like McCarthy’s own Identity Thief, replacing Sarandon with Jason Bateman as the comedian’s road-trip buddy. Maybe there’s a lot more to Tammy than just Melissa McCarthy being Melissa McCarthy for 90 minutes. So far, the trailers haven’t suggested that, but we’re leaving the door open, with hope.
Tammy has to contend with the tough release date of July 2. We’re assuming that most of the screens around it will be swallowed up by Michael Bay’s robo-tastic Transformers: Age of Extinction. Not to mention the fact that other comedies like 22 Jump Street and Neighbors will have entertained crowds prior to Tammy dropping. Melissa McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone (who directs and co-writes), are going to have to come up with something memorable to help Tammy stand out from a crowded, competitive summer marketplace. We’ll see what they cook up when Tammy arrives in theaters later this season, but from what we have screened so far, are you enticed to grab a ticket?
