Orlando Bloom Practices Bad Medicine In The Good Doctor Trailer

No offense to Orlando Bloom, but I knew absolutely nothing about his upcoming The Good Doctor until Apple dropped a trailer onto its site. A 2011 holdover, it stars Bloom as an emotionally stunted physician whose practice takes a turn when he meets a young patient (Riley Keough) with a kidney infection. You know, why don’t I just let he trailer do the talking:

“You’re a good doctor,” the wounded, pretty Keough says. “You’re a good patient,” Bloom’s Dr. Martin Blake answers. And with that, the buildig blocks of an unhealthy obsession have been laid.

Lance Daly (Last Days in Dublin, The Halo Effect) directs The Good Doctor, which looks like a solid turn-the-screws drama with a flawed character making selfish decisions and rapidly spiraling out of control as the seams to his peaceful existence come undone. Daly recruited an outstanding supporting cast, including Taraji P. Henson as a supportive nurse, Michael Pena as a blackmailing orderlie, and – in a welcome addition – J.K. Simmons as what looks to be a detective who is investigating the string of abnormalities in Blake’s hospital.

The Good Doctor has taken a twisty road to theaters. It first played the Tribeca Film Festival in 2011, moving from there to the Mill Valley and New Hampshire film festivals in October 2011 and a strong of smaller fests in 2012. Magnolia has the distribution rights to the drama, and has revealed an Aug. 31 release date (probably limited). Apple’s site, however, says those who are dying to see Bloom’s latest can get it on iTunes starting on July 27.
