Roach Crawls Inside Deep Throat

Now that we all know who Deep Throat is, it’s time to make a movie about it. Austin Powers director Jay Roach has signed up to direct an as of yet untitled film about W. Mark Felt, the career FBI man who last year revealed himself to be the secret source dubbed “Deep Throat” who helped Washington reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein crack open Watergate and bring down Richard M. Nixon. The script is currently being written by Peter Landesman, the man behind Who Killed Daniel Pearl?

Of course the question you’re probably all asking is: Why is Jay Roach making a porn movie? Behold the stupidity of my generation. Frankly, we don’t care about Watergate and when the big news of Deep Throat’s identity was revealed last year, most Gen Xers and Gen Yers simply shrugged their shoulders and headed over to their computers to download classic adult films. I doubt Roach will be able to get us anymore interested in the subject by turning it into a movie… unless of course he somehow works in nudity.

But, for the historically literate among you, this idea is probably pretty interesting. Jay Roach is an odd choice though to direct it. He’s made his fame on things like sharks with frickin laserbeams attached to their heads. It’s hard to imagine him doing serious, historical drama.

Even if Roach pulls this off and makes something good out of it, he’s doomed to suffer comparisons to All the Presidents Men, the critically acclaimed and definitive movie on the subject. Of course, when Presidents Men was made we didn’t know who Deep Throat was, so Roach ought to be able to get something new out of the whole Watergate thing. But that doesn’t mean anyone under 50 will be interested.
