"Winter Passing" is a dramatic comedy by award-winning playwright Adam Rapp, charting the fractious reunion of an estranged father and daughter. Struggling twenty-something actress Reese Holden (Zooey Deschanel) has been promised $100,000 for publication of love letters written by her legendary, but reclusive father, novelist Don Holden (Ed Harris), to his equally revered late wife, Mary, also an acclaimed writer and Reese's mother. In search of these letters, Reese treks from New York City back home to Michigan, where she finds her father in flagrant disregard of his own health and living with two younger housemates: one, a practical former grad student, Shelly (Amelia Warner) and the other, a would-be musician, Corbit (Will Ferrell). Though no angel herself, Reese does not approve of this ad-hoc "family." Little by little, she comes to appreciate her unlikely new family, and as secrets are revealed, Reese comes to terms with her father and their shared past and hopeful future.

Will Ferrell’s quest for legitimacy continues with Winter Passing. Cut it out Will and get back to wacky comedies. Hollywood starlets, indie films, and serious directors are not for you. You’re not Tom Hanks man.

At least he’s doing comedic dramas, rather than Oxygen channel worthy Oscar-bait. I mean, it’s not like he’s playing mentally challenged characters or anything. And, his turn in The Producers really was the best thing about that movie, aside from Uma’s sprawling leggage that is.

The film is written and directed by Adam Rapp, who as far as I can tell has never done anything, noteworthy or otherwise. It does however have a pretty great cast. You can’t ignore that.
