So You Think You Can Dance is pretty much the dancing version of American Idol. Like Idol, the season starts out with auditions which consist of people ranging from awful to amazing showing off their moves. The dance styles include ballet, ballroom, breakdancing, jazz and just about every other popular style of dance so there’s a pretty wide variety of auditioners.

Also like Idol, there are various rounds of auditions in which the dancers have to learn routines, perform group and solo numbers and hope that the judges thing they have a shot. Then in the post-Vegas rounds, the dancers are coupled up and they perform each week, with America voting to decide who goes.

I fell in love with this series last summer and since then I’ve been really looking forward to its return. When you think about it, good dancing isn’t something we really see much of, at least not compared to singing. I think generally we’re more exposed to music because of radio, CDs, MP3’s and all that but how often do you really get to appreciate good dancing? This is what makes this show so great (especially when you compare it to American Idol).

The people who make it to the finals are all outstanding dancers and you know most of them have probably spent years pushing themselves (possibly breaking bones and/or at the very least, getting bruised and bloody in the process) to become as good as they are. SYTYCD is a fun summer show that really showcases just how entertaining dancing can be. Plus the judges are fairly entertaining as well (Mary with her high pitched screaming). There’s always a guest judge, which keeps it interesting and Nigel’s usually got some interesting things to say. And finally, obviously because it’s a dance competition there’s always lots of music. Anticipating the dancers’ song choice is almost as fun as anticipating their routines.
