Brand X Cancelled But FX Keeps Russell Brand Around With Pilot Order image
From Jack Paar to Conan O’Brien, the role of the humorously objective late night talk show host has taken many appearances, and proves that a precise combination of charisma and affability is the key to making such a career a success.

So it’s probably no surprise that on his first day as FX CEO, John Landgraf has cancelled Brand X, Russell Brand’s oft-changing series, less than a year after its debut, though it did technically last for two seasons. It turns out you also need good ratings to stay on the air, along with a track record of not getting on half the population’s nerves. The cancellation allows the far more interesting Totally Biased With W. Kamau Bell to switch from a weekly airing to a nightly one when it returns this fall on the newly formed FXX Network. It helps when you stick to a particular “brand” of subject matter, I guess.

But not all ties have been severed, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as Landgraf has ordered a pilot for a scripted live-action comedy from Brand. The project is bound to incite the same type of reaction that Brand X caused, as it will be loosely based on Brand’s life and is likened to HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm, of all shows. Considering how little scripting that series goes through, there are some worries to be had here. But it’s still very early in its development, so all judgments are withheld.

Need more Brand in your life? Get it when Despicable Me 2 hits theaters July 3, 2013.
