Don't Miss Dan Harmon's Reddit AMA Tomorrow
In the wake of television becoming the marquee medium, starting sometime around the debut of The Sopranos on HBO, there has not only been an increased interest in critical analysis but also a different understanding of the content. Well, some of the content. And just as the 'filmmaker' became a key figure (and celebrity) when cultural theorists began studying the aesthetic and narrative properties of cinema, the series 'creator' has similarly moved more and more into the spotlight.
Showrunner is no longer an 'inside baseball' term, or something bandied about in an analysis of gender in Joss Whedon's Buffy The Vampire Slayer, but the person to whom fans even attribute the voice, success and failure of a series. And no creator/showrunner has received more praise and scrutiny over the last few seasons (except maybe Mad Men's Matthew Weiner) than Community's Dan Harmon. Sorry, Dan Harmon, the creator and former showrunner of the NBC 'sitcom' who was relieved of his duties just after the fourth season renewal.
But now the fans get their chance to chat with the man himself since he's decided to do a reddit AMA ('Ask Me Anything,' the schedule's on the sidebar) on Wednesday. The writer confirmed his appearance via twitter today announcing that he's not only going but, "going to do it right!" Harmon has never been less than candid in the past so this should be interesting plus it's not his first AMA rodeo. He, as well as cast members Gillian Jacobs, Donald Glover, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown and writer Megan Ganz, have all run the gauntlet before and the links can be found on the side of the Community sub-reddit.
I hope the session isn't bogged down too much with questions about the 'firing' as much as his - now squashed - plan for the show as well as all the many projects he's set up elsewhere, especially Anomalisa the 40-minute animated film based on a Charlie Kaufman play. Harmon's an executive producer on Anomalisa, along with Dino 'My Name Is Alex' Stamatopoulos (under their Starburns Industries banner), which will be directed by Duke Johnson, the artist responsible for animating Abed's Uncontrollable Christmas. A lot of Community ties and, as an added bonus, you can find out more from Stamatopoulos who will be having an AMA of his own one week later.
Once again, Dan Harmon's AMA is Wednesday, August 22 at 3:00 p.m. ET (12:00 p.m. PT) with Dino Stamatopoulos on Wednesday August 29 at 3:00 p.m. ET.
