First Look Featurette At Fox And Jonah Hill's Animated Series Allen Gregory
Allen Gregory, the new animated series from Fox and Jonah Hill, just happened to be both my final and favorite panel of this year's Comic-Con. Even after only a seven-episode order from the network, the show looks great and is probably one of the funniest pilots I've ever seen. It's not uncommon for a show to take a few episodes (seasons) to find its footing but with only that minimal ep order, there was no time to waste finding footing and, by the looks of the footage and this new behind-the-scenes featurette, they did waste any.
Allen Gregory, is about, as Hill put it, "the most pretentious seven-year-old on the planet" as he endures his first days in public school. The show is full of raunch, but underlying the series is a very basic and relatable premise, "being the odd man out and striving to fit in and make friends." It's the mixture of complete vulgarity and arrogance with this underlying sweetness that sold me on the show. Don't get me wrong, this won't be a hugs and morals kind of series as it's unapologetically crass but that doesn't mean you can't throw a little heart in there.
The footage they presented is what actually sold me on the show because it always comes back to the quality of the product, and this is quality. And not just in the joke department either, although the preview was heavy on the laughs (even if Jonah Hill wasn't heavy anymore), as the animation was also of pristine quality. Bento Box Entertainment is the company in charge of the show's animation (as well as others, like Bob's Burgers) and they seem to be on top of the(ir) game.
This new first look featurette for the show just gives us a little background on Allen Gregory and introduces the actors/characters before inviting us to see snippets of a table read. It's pretty cool to get this kind of access and to see a bunch of talented actors rehearse what would become the pilot. I don't know how much this video will see you on the show, but it does give a great look at what goes on behind the scenes. See for yourself.
The creative team behind the new Fox series includes; showrunner David Goodman alongside writers/creators Jarrad Paul, Andrew Mogel, and Jonah Hill. Hill also voices the lead and Allen Gregory will also feature the voices of Nat Faxon, French Stewart, Leslie Mann, Will Forte and Jake Johnson (among many others).
Allen Gregory debuts on Fox, Sunday at 8:30 p.m. ET on October 30. It premieres right after The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horror" episode...not a bad lead-in for a new animated comedy.
