The Newsroom Preview: More Character Spots For Aaron Sorkin's HBO Drama
Aaron Sorkin's The Newsroom is airing just in time to help fill the ever expanding summer void at HBO. The second season of Game of Thrones is over, Veep's first campaign just came to an end and the Girls are going away this weekend, meaning that the new series about the news has its work cut out for it. Okay, some people are sated by the return of True Blood but the sexy, soapy and over-the-top show about vampires (and all other things supernatural) can only do so much to make you forget about the rest. Even with glamouring.
The Newsroom is about, you guessed it, the behind-the-scenes, day-to-day operations of a news program which is right in the middle of a personnel change and crisis of conscience. Lead anchor Will McAvoy if fed up with pandering to the lowest common denominator and avoiding the tough questions, so he decides, along with his inexperienced team, to make 'News Night' a program actually worth watching and worthy of being called the news. To prepare audiences for their big summer series debut, HBO has already released a handful of trailers promoting Sorkin's drama, all of which look quite good, and just last week we shared character spots for Jeff Daniels' newsman, Emily Mortimer's executive producer, Olivia Munn's financial reporter and Sam Waterston's news division president.
Now, and just as I predicted, the network has followed up the main characters with spots introducing other members of the large ensemble working at News Night. I would say the rest of the ensemble but promos for Dev Patel's blogger Neal Sampat or Jane Fonda's media mogul Leona Lansing are still unaccounted for but what we do have are introductions for Alison Pill, John Gallagher, Jr. and Thomas Sadoski. Pill, who was great in this year's Goon, plays Maggie Jordan who is a News Night intern suddenly made associate producer. Like, two hours ago.
The next spot features John Gallagher, Jr. as senior producer Jim Harper. Harper decided to follow his boss, Emily Mortimer's executive producer Mackenzie McHale, to News Night even though he got shot in the butt working for her in Afghanistan. He also develops a thing for Pill's Maggie. Gallagher seems tailor made for a Sorkin drama, just something about his look, and it's probably only a matter of time before he ends up in a Woody Allen picture.
Lastly, we have Thomas Sadoski as Don Keefer, the former executive producer of New's Night who presumably leaves for greener pastures. Why, if he's no longer with the show within the show, is his character still central to the drama? Well, Don is in a relationship with Maggie which may run into a little bit of trouble after the arrival of Gallagher's Harper. Like I said, drama.
The Newsroom premieres Sunday, June 24 on HBO. It stars Jeff Daniels, Emily Mortimer, Sam Waterston, Olivia Munn, Alison Pill, Dev Patel and Jane Fonda. It was created by Aaron Sorkin.
