TV Recap: HIMYM - Little Minnesota

TV Recap: HIMYM - Little Minnesota You always knew there was a good reason Ted kept Barney away from his sister and on this week’s How I Met Your Mother we find out why. I mean, really, you know why. Plus, Robin makes me wish I was from Canada for the first time in my life. Who knew I would ever even think that? Craziness.

First off, it’s Barney. Every year he turns a Christmas song into a song about how he wants to sleep with Ted’s sister, Heather, and every year Ted thwarts his attempts by not introducing them to each other. Add to that the fact that Heather is a tad irresponsible (think selling Ted’s TV and couch for last minute plane tickets to Spain so she can catch a Nine Inch Nails concert) and you have the makings of a perfect Ted nightmare. It’s no wonder that he didn’t tell Barney that Heather was coming to town. Only, he did the world’s biggest blabbermouth, Lily. Damn Lily. Can’t keep a secret to save her life. Not surprisingly, upon Heather’s arrival, Barney is waiting patiently at Ted and Robin’s apartment to meet the young Mosby.

Heather, though, seems to have cleaned up her act. She’s looking to move to New York and work in finance but Ted can’t see it. She’s just too impulsive. Having met Barney, though, she has an in at the best bank ever, Goliath National Bank, of course, and so she meets him at his office for an interview. Knowing that neither of them are completely trustworthy, Ted sends Lily to spy on them. And spy on them she does. She actually walks in on them as they’re getting dressed again. Ruh-roh. Poor Ted. Barney takes all his women. Except this time, Ted was wrong.

Heather and Barney knew that Ted was expecting the worst from them. They also knew that Lily wouldn’t be able to keep their secret for anything so they faked sleeping together to teach Ted a lesson. What lesson that was, I’m still not sure? Maybe to trust your best friend and your sister? He wouldn’t not trust them if they didn’t give him such good reasons, though. Hello, Barney, remember that whole Robin thing (that’s still going on). And Heather was caught shoplifting just 8 months ago so she can’t really talk. Except they both do and they make Ted feel so guilty that he co-signs Heather’s lease. He’s such a softie. They don’t grow ‘em so wussy in Canada, or Minnesota for that matter.

Robin never knew anywhere else was like her Canada and each year she’s reminded of that fact around the Holidays. People bundle up in scarves as she eats ice cream sitting outside in a t-shirt. Hockey is in full force and there’s nothing but buildings surrounding her. Feeling her pain, Marshall brings her to the place he always go to cure his homesickness. It’s a little bar where everyone is from Minnesota, they play FQ (Fisherman’s Quest), and all the guys are real men. It’s almost as good as being home and soon Robin’s more in demand there than Marshall is. Of course, all the Minnesotans make fun of Canadians for being afraid of the dark (?) but even that doesn’t deter Robin.

Yup. Robin’s as good as home until she beats Marshall’s high score on FQ and he outs her as Canadian which means she’s no longer allowed in the Minnesota bar. Ready to flee New York for the first time since she moved, Marshall then convinces her to stay because, “It’s not New York without Robin Scherbatsky.” So cute. Then, giving her perhaps the perfect Christmas present, he takes her to Hosen House, a tiny little Canadian bar in the heart of NYC. This is the kind of place that when you bump into some one, they apologize and offer you doughnuts on the house. No, really, that’s what happened. Oh yeah, and they all join in when Marshall sings a Robin Sparkles song during karaoke. It is nice to be home during the holidays.
