Head for Terabithia on June 19th

I’ve found myself complaining a lot lately about mismarketed movies – films that were represented as being one kind of movie when they were something else entirely. One of the biggest disasters in that area is heading for DVD and Blu-Ray on June 19th: Bridge to Terabithia.

The movie adaptation of Katherine Paterson’s Newberry Award-winning novel drew attention earlier this year as a Chronicles of Narnia / Lord of the Rings type movie, where kids from the “real world” discover a fantasy world they can escape to. That isn’t, however, what the movie is about. So much so that the producers of the film went public with their dissatisfaction over the film’s marketing.

Instead, Bridge to Terabithia is a coming of age story, following two fifth graders who cope with issues in their lives by creating stories about the fantasy world of Terabithia. Quite a different kind of story, don’t you think?

The release carries a lot of the extra material we’ve come to expect from Disney, including a music video performed by cast member AnnaSophia Robb:

DVD and Blu-ray Disc Bonus Features

  • Behind the Book: The Themes of Bridge to Terabithia
  • Digital Imagination: Bringing Terabithia to Life
  • “Keep Your Mind Wide Open” Music Video Performed by AnnaSophia Robb
