VH1 Keeps The 80s Alive, Again

Let the celebration of the 80’s continue. Paramount Home Entertainment and VH1 proudly announce the addition of 30 more memorable flicks to the I Love the 80’s Collection ready for purchase February 3rd.

The effort to preserve high tops, acid washed jeans and mullets began in August when 40 of the decade’s most memorable films including Airplane, Pretty in Pink and Top Gun were released on DVD rocking some new retro packaging. The newest members of the family will sport similar duds and be accompanied by a CD with four songs from top recording artists of the time in addition to two free music downloads. They’ll run you anywhere from $12.99 to $19.99 per DVD.

I don’t quite understand the purpose of releasing these films as parts of a collection as opposed to just letting them stand on their own. It would be one thing if VH1 put a fun twist on the films or added bonus material in accordance to their television programs, but all you’re getting besides the movie are a couple of potentially unwanted music tracks. Nostalgia always overpowers practicality when it comes to buying a DVD, but it seems like buying the film outside of this collection would be the more gratifying way to remember the film.

Maybe it is only because I’m comparing the newest installments to the original ones, but it seems as though the list of additional films is far less exciting. The majority of the films from the first 40 were ones I’ve seen dozens of times and could watch dozens more. I can’t say the same for the next 30. In fact, I haven’t even seen a majority of them. Take a look for yourself and see if any strike your fancy:
