Walking, Talking Vegetables Are A Little Hard To Swallow

Looking for a way to get your kids to learn about the Bible? Big Ideas, Inc. certainly has a different approach to getting children to connect to God’s Word. You can get a copy of VeggieTales: Abe and the Amazing Promise on DVD in Christian stores February 7th. If you’re an advocate of the idea that good things come to those who wait, you can hold off until February 10th when the disc is released everywhere.

Abraham and Sarah had to wait for the day they would become parents. Now, Bob the Tomato works to bring their story to life in order to teach audiences a lesson about patience. Unfortunately, some spitting camels and crazy French peas test Bob’s own patience. The story features the voice of radio host “Delilah” as Sarah. In addition to Bob’s tale, the disc also comes with Blunders in Boo-Boo-Ville in which Jacques (Larry the Cucumber) teaches children the importance of taking time to do thing through his effort to bring back the boo-boo bird. The veggie fun continues with a sing-a-long to the song “Sneeze If You Need To,” a behind the scenes look at Abe and the Amazing Promise, video trivia, an interactive storybook, discussion guide and an interactive game.

Where as kids might have had enough vegetables at dinner after one pea, if they haven’t had enough of VeggieTales after one DVD, you can pick up The VeggieTales Bible from Zonderkidz as well. The book is a 32 page Veggie-retelling of eight Bible stories. Each story aims to teach children about life lessons such as forgiveness and being helpful.

I know that these products are geared towards kids eight-years-old and under, but I can’t imagine myself being enthused about learning religion from a gang of vegetables even at that age. Kids don’t even want to eat their vegetables, why would they want to watch a movie based on them? Wouldn’t it be healthier for children to learn from more realistic characters? Then again, there’s something disturbing about The Wiggles. If VeggieTales strikes your fancy, you can pick up Abe and the Amazing Promise for $14.99 and The VeggieTales Bible for $24.99.
