Dota 2 Reborn's beta is getting underway to allow players to play-test the new features and massive expanses that Valve is implementing into the free-to-play MOBA. The Dota 2 Reborn page was recently updated with the second entry in the three part series looking at the all new features for the game.
The second part of the update focuses on custom game modes and content. If you're thinking about custom content like Team Fortress 2 then you're thinking on the right track. The new Dota 2 Reborn update will allow players to build their very own game modes, maps, features and more. The developer tools will include easy-to-use LUA scripts and GUI-based design functions so anyone who is familiar with making content in Garry's Mod, Battlefront or a dozen and one other titles out there that use LUA scripts will be right home with Dota 2's new and improved development tools.
Valve mentions on the update page that the reason they're adding in these tools and features is because they know about the importance of giving back to the community; understanding the importance of growing the mod scene because a new mod could be the next billion dollar franchise. As noted on the page, they write...
For us, Custom Games represent a continuation of the tradition that gave birth to Dota, Team Fortress and Counter-Strike. We'd like to build an ecosystem where you can experience something new every time you launch Dota 2.
In the previous update it was mentioned that the game's menu system and UI was being overhauled. Well, part of the reason that the game's menus and UI was being overhauled was to support the new custom game modes. Players can now use the custom game mode hub to find all new modifications for Dota 2.
You simply click on the custom mode and proceed to hop into the game.
Players can use the hub to test out and see what new mods and modes are available in Dota 2 or filter out the ones that are incomplete and only go for the best of the best. The whole idea behind the new UI is to make it as easy as possible to find what you're looking for so you can start playing.
In addition to this, new features like the friends activity allows you to see what games or custom modes your friends have been playing in Dota 2 so you can either join them or check out the custom content.
Built into the game is also a Steam Workshop voting mechanism, so if you enjoy the content from a certain author you can easily upvote it or downvote it as you see fit.
Spectacting the custom games is also possible so if you don't want to waste your time trying to play a custom mode you can watch someone else have a go at it and decide if you want to join in or play something else in Dota 2.
Additionally, to help get some modders started with making their own content, Valve will be releasing their own authored custom modes so gamers can take apart the files, check out the source files and either replicate the contents, add new new content or build something completely new.
The developer tools include the Hammer editor, model editor, material editor, particle editor and the developer console. All the software tools are included to help you get started in making your own custom Dota 2 mods, scripts, effects, maps and whatever else your imagination can conjure up.
