It turns out Sledghammer Games' decision to take the Call of Duty series back to the trenches of the Second Great War was a good one. Based on reports from its first month on the market, Call of Duty WWII is selling really well.
We received word via press release earlier this week that Call of Duty WWII had become the top-selling game for not only the month of November, but also the entire year. For those of you who are confused following the success of games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey, you have to remember that those games launched on a single console that, while super successful, hasn't had four years to build it audience.
The folks over at Gameinformer have followed up with a breakdown of the NPD results for November and, as touted, the latest Call of Duty is sitting pretty at the top of the pack. In case you're curious about how the rest of the top results shake out, it's followed by Star Wars: Battlefront II (despite all of the controversy surrounding the game), Assassin's Creed: Origins at third, NBA 2K18 in fourth and Madden NFL 18 in fifth.
While we don't have exact numbers, the original report states that the latest COD won the month by a sound margin. On top of that, Activision is reporting this was not only their top-selling game from the past 12 months (which includes last November), but also the top-selling game for that period, in general. In other words, it looks like Call of Duty is back at the front of the pack.
This is impressive, because the game had been falling out of favor with fans over recent years. As the Call of Duty series crept further into the future, more fans became disinterested. While last year's Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare was a solid hit for critics, players simply didn't show up for the party in their usual numbers. This was expected as, once the game's reveal trailer got posted, it became one of the most panned things in YouTube history. That was contrasted against the new Battlefield game set during World War I, which consumed all of the hype.
So it looks like the community wasn't just making blind complaints. They wanted to see the series return to its roots and, once that happened, they appear to have come out in droves.
And in case you need those sales figures driven home a bit more, remember that Call of Duty WWII became the top-selling game of the past year following just a single month on the market. If that doesn't speak strongly for the power of a popular brand, I don't know what does.
