The Nintendo DSi has just been released in Japan but those of us elsewhere in the world will have to wait a lot longer. We won't be getting our grimy little mitts on the third iteration of the DS until next summer

According to Reuters, Nintendo president President Satoru Iwata said that they expected to release the DSi in overseas markets by the summer of 2009. "Specific plans will be unveiled by our local subsidiaries, but an autumn or year-end launch would probably be too late," Iwata told reporters and analysts at a meeting today.

Shorter Iwata: "Summer 2009 at the latest." Could even be sooner - which would fit with an earlier statement by Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime that the DSi could hit Europe in spring 2009. Once the holiday season is behind us, the situation will probably become less cloudy.
