Soon players will get the opportunity to try out Microsoft Flight, successor to the long-running Flight Simulator series. You can sign up for the sim's beta test at the game's official website.

Flight is said to bring a "new perspective" to the franchise. It offers a new set of challenges, some of which are designed to draw novices into the series. Seasoned flight sim fans won't be left out in the dark, though. Flight features enhanced scenery and a fresh selection of aircraft. The game will also have social features and some kind of in-game store.

This will be the first flight sim released by Microsoft since Flight Simulator X back in 2006. Flight Simulator series developer ACES Game Studio was closed in 2009. Some former members of ACES are part of Microsoft Flight's team.

Flight is designed to run on a pretty wide range of systems. Here are the system requirements from Microsoft:

  • CPU: Dual Core 2.0 GHz
  • GPU: 256 MB card capable of shader 3.0 (DX 9.0c compliant)
  • HD: 10 GB Hard Drive space
  • OS: WinXP SP3
  • RAM: 2.0GB

  • GPU: ATI Radeon™ HD 5870, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 560 or better
  • HD: 10 GB Hard Drive space

The beta is expected to start in January. The release window for the final game hasn't been nailed down.
