As you probably guessed, a key part of casting the upcoming big screen adaptation of the wildly popular 1990s lifeguard drama Baywatch is finding actors and actresses that look good in those signature red swimsuits and running down the beach in slow motion. So far they’ve successfully filled this bill with the likes of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, Alexandra Daddario, Zac Efron, Kelly Rohrbach, and Prinyanka Chopra, among others. Though filming has started, they’re not done yet, as they’ve added Mexican beauty and social media sensation Belinda to the already camera-friendly cast.
According to Deadline, Belinda, who is also a successful singer and songwriter in addition to being a busy actress, has joined the cast of Baywatch. Though the specific details of her role have yet to be revealed, we are wiling to bet that, at some point during the comedic take on the source material, she’ll wind up wearing some sort of swim attire. We could be wrong, but we’re confident in this bold prediction.
Casting Belinda adds a whole other potential market for Baywatch to tap into, as she has a huge following in Mexico and among Latino audiences. Her career began in 2000, when she was just ten-years-old and starred in Amigos X Siempre, a telenovela aimed at children. She later appeared in other programs for younger audiences, Aventuras en el Tiempo in 2001 and Cómplices al Rescate.
In addition to her acting, which has continued over the years from her time as a child star, Belinda also has an incredibly successful music career. She has released four studio albums, sold more than 16 million albums globally, and toured extensively, earning a pair of Latin Grammy nominations along the way. Not too shabby.
Belinda also has an incredible reach on social media. Though she’s not on Facebook, her Instagram and Twitter accounts each have well over 3 million followers, and her YouTube channel has more than 200,000 subscribers—she actually took to social media to confirm her role in Baywatch. You just know that Paramount is drooling over the prospect of being able to lure Belinda’s fan base to the theaters for some fun in the sun.
Baywatch ran from 1989 through 2001 (including the Baywatch Hawaii years) and became an international smash—it turns out pretty people wearing minimal amounts of clothing in gorgeous settings translates very well. The action centered around a tight-knit group of Los Angeles lifeguards where they have to deal with all kinds of events from earthquakes to murderers to sharks, in addition to normal life-saving stuff and a crazy amount of sexual and romantic tension.
Filming on the Seth Gordon (Identity Thief, Horrible Bosses) directed Baywatch recently kicked off production. It will give audiences mouth to mouth on May 19, 2017.
