Hollywoodland was the number one movie this weekend! Well, it was...sort of. If you're looking at how much each movie made per theater the highly acclaimed film took in more than anything else int the top ten. I wish I could say it was also the highest grossing movie this weekend, but that would mean America had the common sense to go see the better movie.
No, a majority of theater goers went to see The Covenant on what was a very slow weekend. Nothing broke double digit millions with The Covenant siphoning off $9 million with Hollywoodland following at $6 million. The other new release, Tony Jaa's The Protector, garnered a fourth place start with $5 million.
If Box Office Mojo's information are accurate, there may finally be an explanation for why Fox has been so hesitant to release sales data for Mike Judge's Idiocracy. According to the numbers, the movie has been in 130 theaters all week but made very little cash. Its weekend totals came in at less than $125,000 and haven't improved over the week. While that's not bad, perhaps, for a movie that got almost zero marketing, it's sad news for something so critically acclaimed. No numbers for his weekend have been released yet, but they're likely to be pretty bad.
Next weekend crime drama The Black Dahlia takes on sports drama Gridiron Gang. Fox will also release the CG animated baseball flick Everyone's Hero. It seems like something that should have come out this summer, but given the glut of CG that came during the season, it's easy to see why Fox held it back.
Somewhere in there Zach Braff's The Last Kiss will struggle for attention. Only opening in 1100 theaters, it's in the quintessential Braff underdog situation.
