Warner Bros. has been fiercely fanning the fevered flames of fandom by unrolling a wide array of promotional materials that give a look at the lushly realized world of the Lord of the Rings trilogy's director Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Aside from setting up the premise for this prequel where a young Bilbo Baggins is urged by Gandalf the wizard to set out on a dangerous quest with a band of warrior dwarves, the movie's marketing has been dedicated to dramatically unveiling each member of this sprawling ensemble. Well, almost every member. Despite being a major part of the plot, the ads so far have shied away from showing Smaug.

Fans of the BBC mystery series Sherlock thrilled at the news that the show's stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman would reunite in The Hobbit. In a switch from the series, it's Freeman who fronts this feature, playing the titular Halfling, while Cumberbatch has a far less showy part playing an unnamed Necromancer…and lending his voice to the dragon Smaug. With the beloved book being broken up into three films (An Unexpected Journey, The Desolation of Smaug, and There And Back Again), the first is not expected to feature much of the malevolent monster. But the latest TV spot does give us one terrifying glimpse of the horrendous hoarder. Check it out below:

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey makes its way to theaters in 3D and IMAX 3D (and HFR 3D) on December 14th. For more on the film, including a gallery of images and a collection of trailers and behind-the-scenes featurettes, head over to our Blend Film Database.
