DVD Blend - 07/12/05

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some arenít. Some of them are movies Iíve seen, and some of them arenít. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to amazon.com and youíll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, hereís the DVD Blend.

Bill & Ted's Most Excellent Collection

Excellent dude! This righteous set puts to rest one of the most heinous issues to show its face in the world of DVDs - the lack of extras on Bill & Ted movies. While both Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure and Bogus Journey have been out for a while on DVD, they’ve been bare bone editions. This Excellent Collection puts both movies together along with an episode of the cartoon series, a making-of documentary, a history lesson - Bill & Ted style, and even a tutorial for those who need help with their air guitar. Celebrate the movie that set the standard we hold Keanu Reeves to with this Excellent set.

Dodgeball: Unrated Edition

Damn you Fox! I’m sick and tired of seeing secondary releases with the bonus material that should have been on the first release. Still, Dodgeball was one of my favorite comedies from last year, and double dipping on this one is very tempting. However, the “unrated” version of the film is only a minute longer than the original movie, and most of the bonus material is made up of stuff from the first release, with the exception of a new commentary track for the movie. I’ll be taking a closer look at this release for a review, but I’m not expecting great things from it.

Tales from the Crypt: The First Season

I didn’t have HBO when “Tales from the Crypt” aired, so my experience with the show has unfortunately been second run syndication which suffered from network censorship. The first season’s six episodes are a bit disappointing in quantity, but include guest appearances from William Sadler (Shawshank Redemption), Larry Drake, Amanda Plummer, Lea Thompson (Back to the Future), Joe Pantoliano (“The Sopranos” and just about everything else out there) and of course, the great quips and one liners by the Crypt Keeper. Thankfully the price is right for a set with so few episodes. Definitely worth a look!

Other titles released this week that might be worth your time:
Row 1 - Cell 0 Million Dollar Baby - Yes, I know this probably deserves a spot up there at the top, but the truth is this movie was guaranteed a victory at the Academy Awards by being the only film nominated that I didn’t catch in theaters. Since I haven’t seen it, I have less to say about it, but I guess as the movie that won “Best Picture” and “Best Director”, it’s probably worth a look.Row 1 - Cell 2 A Very Long Engagement - The star and director of Amelie reunite for this tale of a woman separated from her fiance during the first world war and the effects of that battle on just about everyone around them. This is another one of those independent movies that more people should have caught and now have the opportunity to catch on DVD.
Row 2 - Cell 0
Row 3 - Cell 0 Cry Baby - Director's Cut - With Depp gaining mainstream popularity it’s no big surprise to see bigger releases of his older movies hitting shelves. This director’s cut is coming out just in time to cash in on Depp’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Do we have to wait for Pirates 2 to get a decent edition of Benny & Joon?Row 3 - Cell 2 The Best of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe - For those ‘80s fans who’ve been waiting for He-Man’s debut on DVD, this is probably a disappointment. This set includes the 10 favorite episodes as voted by He-Man.org. At least the episodes are broken down by season, with five Season one episodes on the first disc, and five from Season two on the second disc.
Row 4 - Cell 0
