DVD Blend - 07/26/05

Each week DVDs come out. Some of them are worth your time and money and some aren't. Some of them are movies I've seen, and some of them aren't. Regardless, I give you my opinion on the big releases of the week. If the releases sound like something you want to buy, just click the link to go to amazon.com and youíll support Cinema Blend with a few pennies. Take it or leave it, here's the DVD Blend.

The Jerk (26th Anniversary Edition)

Who in the heck has a 26th Anniversary Edition? Don’t you usually celebrate a big anniversary like the 25th or so? I’m trying to figure out if someone decided to do a 26th Anniversary Edition to fall in with the humor of the movie or because Universal Studios just missed the opportunity to release this last year. No matter what, this movie always has me in stitches from the moment Martin’s tale begins (“I was born a poor black child”). Regardless of whether this release is supposed to be funny or a cheap cash in, it’s an absolute must have for any respectable DVD library. Although there seems to be a lack of extras for such a large anniversary, this edition rules above all previous versions for one reason only: widescreen. Don’t wait for my review later this week, pick this up ASAP! (then come back and read my review)

The Upside of Anger

Never would I guess a Kevin Costner flick would be the popular choice by the Cinema Blend critics. Usually we’re all doing our best to avoid the man’s films, but this week three out of... well, three CB critics preferred Kevin Costner over Anthony Anderson (King’s Ransom or Ice Cube (xXx), which I guess says how bad things have to be to make Costner appealing. Although this is another movie with a quick turn around time from theater to DVD, I heard good things about it, so it might actually be worth a look. Unfortunately I didn’t get to catch it myself since it disappeared from theaters so fast you’d expect Rob Schneider was playing the lead. Maybe Costner can thank getting older, or maybe he can thank his co-star Joan Allen, but Anger seems to be worth a look.

xXx: State of the Union

Let’s see, I need three movies worth a look. Do I go with the movie about the Queens, New York Jackass, or Ice Cube. I’m afraid State of the Union wins the toss up, but only because of Samuel L. Jackson’s inclusion. Surprisingly this sequel wasn’t that bad as an action flick, although as a sequel it was pretty bad. Columbia Pictures would have been better off ditching the franchise, coming up with a more original backstory for the film and just having Sammy J. and Ice Cube kicking ass in their own flick. Like The Upside of Anger, this has a quick turn around time from theaters to DVD as well, but doesn’t seem to suffer a lack of extras for it. So why is it the movie that’s been around the longest, celebrating a 26th Anniversary, is the movie with the least amount of extras this week?

Other titles released this week that might be worth your time:
Row 1 - Cell 0 Third Rock From the Sun - Season 1 - See Dick, See Dick visit earth along with Tom, Harry, and Sally. I’ve gotten tired of sitcoms as I’ve gotten older, but something about “Third Rock” always appealed to me. Maybe it was the comedy, maybe it was the depths the cast was willing to subject themselves to get that comedy, or maybe it was their eventual use of Shatner as The Big Giant Head. Who knows, but finally putting Season One on DVD means we’re that much closer to Shatner’s arrival.Row 1 - Cell 2 Steamboy - Director's Cut I really don’t know anything about Steamboy, but I’ve been criticized in the past for ignoring anime, so here’s an anime movie for the fans out there. We now return you to comments about releases I actually care about.
