There was a long time period of time when we thought that the fantasy adaptation Seventh Son was going to be coming out this year, but late last month those plans were altered. While the movie was originally set to come out right before Halloween, Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures wound up shoving it back to January 17, 2014. No reason was given for the push (though it was set to go up against both Carrie and The Escape Plan), but with the two studios putting out Pacific Rim in theaters this weekend they weren't going to miss out on an opportunity to debut a first look at what they have coming up next. And that's exactly what they've done.
What you see above is the first international trailer for Seventh Son, which was released by Warner Bros. UK. We'd love to show you the first domestic trailer as well, but unfortunately it's locked away over on Apple Trailers, so you'll have to head over there if you want to watch it.
Directed by Sergey Bodrov and starring Jeff Bridges, Ben Barnes, Julianne Moore, Alicia Vikander, Kit Harington, Olivia Williams, Antje Traue, and Djimon Hounsou, the film is based on the fantasy series The Wardstone Chronicles by Joseph Delaney and it set back in the 18th century. The story centers on a young man named Thomas Ward (Barnes) who, as the seventh son of a seventh son, serves as an apprentice to Master John Gregory (Bridges), an aging spook who fights evil spirits and is looking toward retirement. And it doesn't take long for Thomas to face his first major challenge an evil woman named Mother Malkin (Moore) who is the most powerful witch in the country.
The CGI doesn't look great the action scenes look cool, but the main standout of this trailer is definitely Jeff Bridges. And it's kind of hard not to marvel at it. The Academy Award winning star is probably most identified with his lead role in the Coen brothers' The Big Lebowski, a laid back, peaceful character whose personality seems to best mirror Bridges' own in real life, and yet he truly can melt into any role and look like he belongs, be it as down-on-his-luck country singer in Crazy Heart, stepping into John Wayne's shoes for the Coens' True Grit, or standing up to and slaying medieval beasties in Seventh Son.
In addition to hosting the new trailer, Apple has also premiered the first poster for the movie, which is basically just more of Bridges being badass. Check it out below.
