For six years, most of the people insisting there will be a sequel to Zoolander have essentially been about Ben Stiller, who not only headlined the first one but also co-wrote and helmed it, Justin Theroux, who wrote and will helm the sequel, or Owen Wilson, who will reprise his role as rival model Hansel MacDonald. The last we heard on the matter was in the fall of 2011, when Wilson said the story picks up 10 years later, and in the interim Hansel has suffered a horrendously disfiguring injury. Yet he offered no clue as to when Zoolander 2 would finally go into production. Now, there's a spark of hope for those of you salivating for more Blue Steel as casting rumors merge.
The U.K.'s Telegraph declares Lady Gaga has been offered a role in Zoolander 2, and a pretty substantial one at that. This time around Zoolander and Hansel will be romantic rivals, vying for the love of Gaga's sure to be freaky yet fashionable character. This appears to be part of a concerted effort to inject as many actual fashion figures into the film as possible, since designers Tom Ford, Donatella Versace, Claudia Schiffer and Karl Lagerfeld are all reported to be making cameo appearances.
Gaga will make her film acting debut next year in Robert Rodriguez's Machete Kills. But her lack of experience wouldn't likely prove a problem for Zoolander 2 since the list of other candidates for her role are similarly green in the acting arena. If Gaga turns down the offer, models Kate Moss, Kate Upton, Heidi Klum and Adriana Lima are said to be in consideration. However, it's worth noting that Telegraph's source on the Gaga news is the British tabloid The Sun, so take all this with a grain of salt or four.
Zoolander 2 has not yet announced a production schedule, but is projected to hit theaters in 2014.
