Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a number of projects in the works, among which is The Looper, a film that reunites him with Brick director Rian Johnson. Those interested in following the progress of what sounds like a sci-fi/action thriller, will definitely want to follow the movie’s Tumblr. Today, a photo was posted that gives us a look at what could prove to be a very crucial piece of the film’s set.

Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Bruce Willis and Emily Blunt, Looper takes place in the future and follows a killer who works for the mob and soon finds that one of his targets is an older version of himself (played by Willis). Is time-travel in the works? It would appear so and that may give us the clue to unraveling this very interesting set photo posted at the Looper tumblr:

The above photo has Johnson seated in the opening of what appears to be some kind of pod-like structure, which could very well be the mechanism that allows for a reality with two different versions of the same person to exist simultaneously. In other words, it might be a time machine. With the exception of a friendly “Happy new year!” message, the photo does not include a caption to confirm what it is, so all we can do is speculate.

All of the wires and what not on the outside of it do seem to indicate that it is a machine. It's unlikely that it’s an escape pod of some sort, given that the film isn't set in space, but with the arch around it, it does sort of remind me of the escape pods in Spaceballs. Again though, factoring in the subject matter of the film, time machine is probably the safest guess here.

What do you think? Does it look like a time machine to you or do you have another guess as to what that thing is? You can view a larger version of the photo here.

Looper is expected to arrive in theaters on September 28 2012. More on the film can be found in our Blend Film Database.
