When I think of Rachael Harris, I picture the berating girlfriend to Ed Helms’ character in The Hangover, or her comedic roles in television, which include Notes from the Underbelly, Reno 911 and various other comedies. Drama is not what comes to mind, and based on the trailer for the 2011 indie film Natural Selection, it seems I may have underestimated her range as an actor.
This is not to say that I wouldn’t think Harris could handle a dramatic role. Just that it’s easier to picture her with the quick-witted comebacks and sarcasm we’ve seen from her in previous roles. From the looks of it, her character Linda in Natural Selection doesn’t fit that description.
Directed by Robbie Pickering, the movie follows a Christian housewife (Harris) living in a Texas suburb whose life changes drastically when she learns that her dying husband has a 23-year-old son (Matt O’Leary) living in Florida. She heads off to track him down and, as you’ll see in the trailer, a lot of unexpected things happen.
The film made its premiere at last year’s South by Southwest Film Festival, and has made the rounds at various other festivals across the globe since. In case you didn’t notice the various quotes featured throughout the trailer, it seems to have been well received by a number of outlets. It certainly looks like a charming film with some humor laced in throughout as well as a bit of self-discovery on the part of Harris’ character.
Natural Selection opens March 16th at the Angelika Film Center in New York, after which it will begin a nationwide rollout.
