Now Johnny Depp May Be The Huntsman In The New Snow White

This week has been all about Snow White and the Huntsman, the Universal adaptation of the classic fairly tale. First it was reported that Inception and future The Dark Knight Rises star Tom Hardy was offered the the male lead; then came the rumor of Charlize Theron as the Evil Queen; and just this morning the film got an official release date. Now a new story is breaking that may very well upend the first one.

The Wrap reports that the studio has now extended an offer to Johnny Depp to play the Huntsman in the fairy tale film, according to an unnamed source. Based on a script by Evan Daugherty, the project expands on the character, no longer making him simply be the man who lets Snow White go after being ordered to kill her. Instead the character is given added depth and a larger role, becoming a mentor to the young beauty, teaching her how to take revenge against her evil step-mother. The article does stress, however, that the prince is still the love interest. When reached for comment, Depp's representation referred the site to Universal, who refused comment.

Earlier this year Depp starred in the adaptation of Alice in Wonderland as the Mad Hatter, so the question will be whether or not he wants to be seen as the go-to guy for revamped fairy tales. Either way, it seems like a juicy part, but with his commitments to a great deal of other projects, including The Lone Ranger, Dark Shadows and potentially Sleeping Dogs, he may simply not have time.
