Shailene Woodley’s in the middle of a moment. The Golden Globes-nominated star of Alexander Payne’s The Descendants recently wrapped her part on Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man 2. She’s moving on to her own massive franchise, playing Beatrice in an adaptation of the bestselling Divergent. And her Sundance hit The Spectacular Now continues to build buzz leading up to its August release.
Now you can add The Fault In Our Stars to her overcrowded plate. We reported earlier that Woodley was in the mix for the lead role of Hazel Grace Lancaster in the adaptation of John Green’s book. Now EW.com confirms the casting, quoting director Josh Boone as saying:
<.blockquote> “During our exhaustive search to find Hazel Grace Lancaster, I saw some stunning auditions by today’s finest young actresses. Over 250 girls read for the part, but it wasn’t until Shailene stepped in front of the camera that I truly saw Hazel for the first time. It was like lightning striking. I can’t wait for the rest of the world to see what I have.”
High praise. Woodley will be playing a teenage cancer patient who’s diagnosed as terminal. At the urging of her physicians, Hazel visits a support group for like-minded, cancer-striken kids … where she meets her soulmate in Augustus “Gus” Waters. The book, which sounds at first glimpse like a melodramatic pile of mush, received enormous critical praise for its sense of humor and honesty about the teenage experience, and the things about being a teenager that are difficult whether or not there's cancer threatening your life.
This might sound a little too close to Spectacular Now, which addresses teenage alcoholism with honesty and humor. But given the praise Boone heaped on Woodley, we’re all now eager to see what she’ll come up with when Fault begins shooting. Woodley’s busier than Jennifer Lawrence these days. A good problem to have. We’ll continue to track Fault, and will bring you updates as they develop.
