Omar’s coming. Specifically, The Wire sensation Michael K. Williams is joining Spike Lee’s next “joint,” a movie he funded through Kickstarter.

Lee confirmed the casting on his official Kickstarter page, stating that Boardwalk Empire co-star Williams joins fellow actors Stephen Tyrone Williams and Zaraah Abrahams in Lee’s cast. The director also says on that portal that the “sexy and bloody” movie will be about “human beings who are addicted to blood.” He comically adds that it is “not a remake of Blacula.” Damn!

Adding Williams to any ensemble automatically makes a movie better. While he’s best known for playing the enigmatic criminal Omar on HBO’s gone-but-never-forgotten drama The Wire, Williams also won a SAG Award for his work on Boardwalk Empire, and he has blown critics and audiences away with his nuanced work in movies (The Road) and on network television (Community). He worked with Lee before, playing Tucker in 2008’s Miracle at St. Anna. Hopefully he’ll have a much bigger role in a picture Lee only calls The Newest Hottest Spike Lee Joint.

Lee somehow dodged the heat that comes with established artists using Kickstarter to fund new projects … the kind of controversy that landed squarely on Zach Braff. At the same time, Lee also met his goal of $1.25 million and even surpassed it, which is something Melissa Joan Hart wasn’t able to do. As Lee says, he has been working the wire in search of money since Day One as a filmmaker, so maybe he just has more experience at raising funds than the rest. I’m going to let Lee explain it himself. He’s a charismatic salesman, and he believes in his craft. It’s hard not to want to support him. Here’s Lee talking about his next film, as well as the movie’s poster. We’ll keep you posted as the movie progresses, now that the seeds of a cast are starting to be planted
