Street Fighter Confirms New Casting And Promises A Plot

The official Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li production blog has been updated with a big casting confirmation. Rick Yune has been replaced in the cast by Robin Shou, who will play Gen. Yeah, I don’t know who any of these people either, but I do know that last week the guys over at MH reported it, and now they’re vindicated.

To complicate the announcement of Shou’s, the Street Fighter folks have posted the first ever image of Shou actually in costume as Gen. That’s a smaller version of the production blog picture there with this story.

Along with this bit of casting news, the SF blog is running an interview with screenwriter Justin Marks, where he attempts to make a case for the original Street Fighter game having a plot. He says, “any true fan of Street Fighter knows about its rich world, its colorful palette of characters, and complicated web of varying interests and betrayals. No story? You’re just not paying attention.” I don’t know Justin, I played a lot of Street Fighter as a kid while trapped inside in front of an air conditioner during Texas’s 110 degree summers, and I’m pretty sure I never noticed a plot. Maybe they saved all that plot stuff for Street Fighter EX, I stopped playing after Street Fighter Alpha. Good decision I’d say, since the fun of Street Fighter is punching people in the head, not wading through random expositional cut scenes, which any fighting gamer worth his salt is smart enough to skip.

Since he wrote the script though, it’s probably a damned good thing that Marks sees some sort of plot in it. After all, he needs something to write on all those pages. I got to email back and forth with the guy a couple of times last week, and he comes off as pretty cool. I’m looking forward to seeing whatever he saw in Street Fighter that I didn’t, while I was busy using Blanka to set E-Honda’s diaper on fire. Check out the rest of what Marks has to say about the movie on StreetFighterMovie.net.
