With the Terminator reboot, now titled Terminator: Genesis, having already added both Jason Clarke and Emilia Clarke to play John and Sarah Connor, respectively, the next logical step in the casting process is to find an actor to play the hero Kyle Reese. While studios behind the movie, including Paramount, Skydance and Annapurna Pictures, haven't found their man just yet, according to Variety they've narrTowed down their options to just a few names. - and believe it or not, none of them have the last name "Clarke."
Sources close to the production have told the trade that young actors Jai Courtney (A Good Day To Die Hard), Boyd Holbrook (The Big C), Wilson Bethel (Hart of Dixie), Sam Reid (Hatfields & McCoys) and newcomer Tom Cocquerel are all going to be spending this upcoming Monday testing for the role of Kyle Reese in Terminator Genesis. The character was originally played by Michael Biehn in James Cameron's 1984 film, and he also had a quick cameo in 1991's Terminator 2: Judgement Day. More recently the robot-fighting time traveler was portrayed by Anton Yelchin in McG's Terminator Salvation in 2009.
Perhaps more interesting than the names of the actors up for the part are the names of the actors who actually wound up turning it down. Variety says that Paramount was initially looking for a more recognizable name to play Reese, but they were turned down by both Nicholas Hoult (who is already heavily invested in the X-Men franchise) and Garrett Hedlund (who has previous reboot experience having starred in 2010's Tron: Legacy).
Of the actors going up for the part, Jai Courtney is probably the most recognizable name. The star got his big breakout playing Varro on 10 episodes of the Starz series Spartacus: War of the Damned, but came to the big screen in a major way last year playing Jack McClane in A Good Day To Die Hard. Unfortunately, the film was completely trashed by critics and ultimately underperformed at the box office.
Thor: The Dark World's Alan Taylor is set to helm Terminator: Genesis, and in addition to Jason Clarke and Emilia Clarke, Arnold Schwarzenegger is set to return in his most iconic role. The film is scheduled to be in theaters on July 1, 2015, meaning that production could start up in the first half of this year.
