Three Pictures A Possibility For Last Man

I don’t know much about comic book Y: The Last Man, which never made its way onto my pull list. That’s probably a good thing, as the story is now coming to an end after sixty issues of the comic, which follows Yorick, a young man who is the only survivor of a plague that wipes out all of the men on Earth. Along with his pet monkey Ampersand, the lad has gone through quite a few adventures, and even though the series is coming to an end, Yorick’s adventure isn’t quite over yet, as the series has spawned a movie adaptation being helmed by Disturbia director D.J. Caruso and potentially starring Shia LaBeouf.

Caruso talked with USA Today about the end of the series and the possible direction for the movie. Initially, the plan for screenwriter Carl Ellsworth (who penned Disturbia) was to cram the entire series into one film, but now the movie will only cover the first fourteen issues of the comic series. That narrows down the scope of the picture a bit and, of course, opens the door for more pictures – specifically, a trilogy of Last Man pictures.

Since I’m not a fan of the comic books, I can’t really say whether a trilogy would be a better approach to the story than a single picture. As long as they’re doing this in the interest of the story, it’s probably a good idea. If they’re stretching things out just to build a franchise, however, that’s another matter entirely. Of course, it’s hard to criticize a franchise that is bringing the comic to a willing end for being too money hungry.
