Director James Ponsoldt is still coming up in the feature world, but one thing that he has proven in the last few years is that he definitely knows how to put a cast together. He paired Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Aaron Paul for the fantastic Smashed; brought Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley together for the first time in the great The Spectacular Now; and most recently he created a brilliant duo with Jesse Eisenberg and Jason Segel in The End of the Tour. Great as all those names are, however, they arguably pale in comparison to the group being put together for his Dave Eggers adaptation The Circle.
We've been reporting about this developing project for a few months now, but today Deadline has revealed that the film has found its fourth and final lead. Because the ensemble is so impressive, we realized that now is the perfect time for one of our casting round-ups, offering an up-close look at the talent The Circle has brought together.
There's a reason why we put his name in the headline. Tom Hanks is the biggest name set to be a part of The Circle's cast, and James Ponsoldt has given him an exciting role to work with. In the movie, he will play one of the founders of the titular company - an internet monopoly that unifies everything in a person's life - from social media, to email, to online shopping. Of course, because this is a thriller we know that not everything is as perfect as it seems, and it wouldn't be all that surprising if Hanks' character is connected to some shady business.
Next up we have Emma Watson, who will reportedly play the central protagonist that the audience will follow through the plot of The Circle. She is set to play Mae Holland, a young and ambitious programmer who gets hired for a job at Tom Hanks' character's company. She finds herself at the center of "a new age of civility and transparency," but there is a serious question about whether or not this is actually a good thing. Those who have been following this film's development will note that Watson wasn't the first choice for the role of Mae, as Alicia Vikander was originally cast for the role in May, but the Harry Potter actress is certainly a wonderful substitute.
John Boyega first broke out thanks to his role in the fantastic Attack The Block a few years ago, and is on the verge of international superstardom thanks to his central role in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. His great big screen opportunities won't end a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away, however, as he also has a key role to play in The Circle. In the movie, he will be playing an "iconized" child prodigy named Ty who is also part of the titular company.
Finally, we have the fourth lead and most recent addition to this awesome cast: the beautiful and amazing Karen Gillan. The actress is already well-versed in the world of science-fiction, having starred both on Doctor Who and in Guardians of the Galaxy, and she'll be exploring the genre once again in Ponsoldt's film. She will be playing Annie, who is described by Deadline as being "a warm, cute, goofy, old-money confident and fiercely intelligent member" of The Circle.
Now that the movie has all of its leads cast, production is scheduled to begin later this month. As of now, the feature doesn't have a release date, but stay tuned for more updates about The Circle, because we're definitely excited for it.
