When you set out on a mission to cancel the apocalypse, you need to bring along some massive firepower. Luckily, the characters that inhabit the Pacific Rim universe have managed to develop some impressive weaponry for themselves over the years. After only one film, the Jaegers have already become some of the most iconic silver screen robots in recent memory, and a brand new poster for Pacific Rim: Uprising promises some cool upgrades for the long-awaited sequel. Check out the poster below to see for yourself.
This poster (which comes to us courtesy of License Global Magazine) shows off some truly badass new Jaeger designs. No official names have been assigned to any of these excellent Kaiju-slaying robots just yet, but their sleek and colorful looks already have us enticed. They seem even more high-tech than the ones seen during the events of the original Pacific Rim, which makes plenty of sense when we consider the fact that Pacific Rim: Uprising will take place years after the first film. That said, despite the upgrades, the basic Jaeger design elements (humanoid body, nuclear chest reactor, reinforced metallic frame, etc.) all remain intact.
Despite the introduction of these new Jaeger designs, the original Gipsy Danger fighter from the original Pacific Rim is still very much expected to make a return as well. No concrete information regarding which members of the sequel's cast will pilot each of these distinct vehicles has been confirmed, but the fact that John Boyega recently teased a photo of Gipsy Danger leads us to believe that he may step into the famous machine as its new pilot this time around.
It's worth mentioning that despite the heavy machinery, it's pretty clear that Pacific Rim: Uprising has not forgotten about the importance of the human characters that operate these impressive robots. One of the most intriguing elements of the upcoming sequel is the prospect of Star Wars' John Boyega portraying the son of Idris Elba's Stacker Pentecost, and the actor recently took to Twitter to share a somber behind the scenes photo of his character. Check it out below.
Regardless of all the action, chaos and carnage that we fully expect to see when Pacific Rim: Uprising hits theaters, it's these decidedly human moments that arguably matter more. The Jaeger pilots were what drove the story of the first movie, and our hope remains alive and well that this new cast of characters can capture the same level of emotion and charm.
CinemaBlend will bring you more information related to Pacific Rim: Uprising as more updates on the project become available to us. The highly anticipated sequel is currently slated to hit theaters next year on February 23, 2018.
