The Masters of the Universe franchise has endured for over three decades through the toy line, many animated TV shows and comic book series, but only one movie has emerged during this time: the live action 1987 adventure starring Dolph Lundgren and Frank Langella. Since 2007, there have been numerous attempts to get a Masters of the Universe reboot off the ground, and this year has seen some significant progress towards making that happen. Now there's word that David S. Goyer is the man Sony is eyeing to direct this blockbuster.
David Goyer was brought in earlier this year to re-write the Masters of the Universe reboot at the same time that McG, who had been attached as its director since the beginning of 2016, departed the project. Now The Wrap is reporting that Goyer is in early negotiations to snag the directorial chair for himself. Since he's already hard at work putting the sci-fi/fantasy story together, it makes sense why Sony is considering passing directing duties to him as well rather than bring in someone else. After a decade of being stuck in development hell, no doubt the studio is eager to finally make this reboot a reality.
As far as directing experience is concerned, David Goyer's credits include Zig Zag, Blade: Trinity, The Invisible and The Unborn, as well as episodes of FlashForward and Da Vinci's Demons. Writing-wise, he has penned numerous blockbusters, from Blade and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance to Batman Begins and Man of Steel. Along with Masters of the Universe, he's also co-writing Green Lantern Corps with Justin Rhodes, and it was rumored in March that Warner Bros was looking at Goyer to helm the reboot starring DC's Emerald Knights. However, with this Masters of the Universe update, presumably that takes priority over any potential directing gig that's over at Warner Bros' superhero realm.
The Masters of the Universe mythology follows the adventures of Prince Adam, who can turn into the powerful He-Man, and his conflict with the sinister Skeletor on the planet Eternia. Skeletor seeks to conquer Castle Grayskull, and with the help of allies like Teela, Man-At-Arms and Sorceress, He-Man has prevented his arch-nemesis from accomplishing this scheme time after time. The 1987 Masters of the Universe movie failed to impress critically and commercially, but has since developed a cult following. Since David Goyer has taken over scripting duties, we have yet to learn how specifically the upcoming reboot will differentiate itself from its cinematic predecessor.
Masters of the Universe is schedule to be released on December 18, 2019. Keep checking back with CinemaBlend for more updates concerning the reboot, and in the meantime, look through our 2018 premiere guide to find out what movies will be released next year.
