If you are reading this, then you probably spend a more than decent amount of time on the internet. Prepare to be utterly terrified by this fact. The new trailer for Oliver Stone’s oft-delayed story about Edward Snowden is finally here and it gives us our first look at the man who blew the whistle on the scope of government surveillance. Get prepared to watch the trailer, but be aware, the government will know you did.
Snowden has been an Oliver Stone project for two years, and the way it kept getting pushed back, we began to wonder if there was some sort of conspiracy involved. Even though it now looks to be moving forward for release this fall, we’re still not sure that wasn’t the case. Snowden tells the story of the man who went to work for the CIA, and then the NSA, to serve his country, only to become very concerned with the way his nation was collecting intelligence on American citizens. He feels a need to inform the world, but in doing so he becomes a wanted man.
Based on the information in this trailer Edward Snowden wasn’t simply a patriot, he was also a genius. While it becomes clear why the government would want somebody with his ability working for them, he also becomes the guy capable of sneaking classified documents out of a secure building. And that's when things get interesting.
The most notable thing in the trailer for Snowden is its star. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is just short of unrecognizable physically. What’s even more amazing is that he sounds nothing like Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Levitt here is very nearly a pitch perfect Edward Snowden. If you listen to the voice of the actual man you can hear how closely he’s come to nailing the man’s speech. It’s not simply the tone but the style as well.
The actions of Edward Snowden were polarizing, to say the least, and so we fully expect that the film will be as well. Oliver Stone has never been one to shy away from controversial topics. Many will criticize the movie, and its authenticity will surely be questioned. However, from this brief look, we’re certainly interested in seeing more of Snowden. We put this one on our list of potential Academy Award nominees for the year, and nothing here has told us that we were wrong. What do you think of your first look at Snowden?
