Plenty of characters on Doctor Who have come and gone over the years. The bendable rules of time and space have meant that pretty much anybody can return. In fact, it's only been in rare cases since the 2005 revival that the show has ever 100% ruled out the possibility of someone coming back to reprise their role. One fan-favorite character has been absent from the Doctor Who-verse for far too long. Luckily, this actor is on board if he should ever be asked to come back. John Barrowman had this to say about Captain Jack dropping by the TARDIS once more:
The answer is always absolutely. It's a show and genre that changed my life; I love it dearly and if I'm asked I would do it at the drop of a hat. And also my producers here in the US for the show I'm on at the moment, Arrow, they've said if that did happen we'd let you do that.
Captain Jack Harkness first appeared as a Time Agent trying to pull one over on Rose and the Ninth Doctor in World War II-era London. He later joined them in their travels as a companion for a few episodes, then was killed for the first time by a Dalek. Rose revived him as an immortal, and he's been alive and adventuring ever since. He even starred in his own spinoff series Torchwood when he wasn't lending a hand to the Doctor. Captain Jack was always a fun character, and it was a disappointment to many that he wasn't brought back for the 50th anniversary special.
John Barrowman has certainly kept busy over the years since he was a well-known face in the Doctor Who universe. He's been a major player in The CW's DC universe ever since joining the cast of Arrow in 2012, and he's recently been bumped up to a regular for all the shows in the Arrow-verse. Barrowman will have a plenty on his plate for the foreseeable future on The CW, so it's nice to know that the producers would be willing to let him go for a while if it meant returning to Doctor Who. He went on in his chat with RadioTimes to say this about the fan demand for more Captain Jack:
I would love to do it, and I do know that there's a huge fanbase. The first question I'm always asked is, 'When are you coming back to Doctor Who?' or 'When is Torchwood coming back?', 'Would you get involved?'
Doctor Who will have a lot going on when it returns for Season 10. The audience and Twelve will both have to adjust to his new companion, and there are even rumors abounding that Season 10 will be Peter Capaldi's last as the Doctor. Season 10 may just have too much going on to do justice to a new Captain Jack story. Who knows? Maybe John Barrowman could turn up on the upcoming spinoff if more Who isn't in the cards any time soon. Only time will tell if and how much of a future there is for Captain Jack on Doctor Who.
