The replacement of Doctor Who is an inevitable part of the show's cycle, but that doesn't make it any less sad when a beloved Doctor says goodbye. Peter Capaldi is on the road to that finale now. Apparently, he felt that now was the right time for it. Capaldi recently appeared on television in the UK where he explained that he was still enjoying making Doctor Who, which seemed like the best time to leave because it's clear he saw the potential for that not to be the case down the road. According to Capaldi...
If doing 12 episodes in a year constitutes a television "factory" then I guess we can be confident that Peter Capaldi will never do a primetime network series over here, where most series produce more than 20 episodes in a season. Still, for the period that the series is filming, one can certainly imagine that it's a very busy period and it's apparently so busy that it doesn't leave Capaldi with the time to do the sort of preparation that he would prefer to do for a role.
The bit about not hating the job was sort of fed to him by the host of The Graham Norton Show, where Peter Capaldi made the comments, so we shouldn't read too much into the idea that Capaldi hates the role, or was on the verge of doing so. Still, he does say that the shooting of his final season took 10 months, so, while the show may only make 12 episodes, it apparently takes much longer to do that for Doctor Who than an American network series would take to film twice as many. We can appreciate how that would begin to wear down one's nerves after a while.
Peter Capaldi also confesses during the interview that he's already filmed the scene in which his character dies, so there's no going back now. There will be a new Doctor Who. So many names get rumored for a role like this one that it's virtually impossible to guess who the real front runner might be. Who would you like to see be the new Doctor?
