Doctor Who Is Bringing A Key Character Back For The Next Holiday Special

Following what's been a challenging year for television, the holiday season is now approaching, and Doctor Who fans are some of the lucky few with something big and special to look forward to. Though the series' holiday specials have often been of the downer variety, fans are no doubt excited to see another adventure with the 13th Doctor ahead of Season 13's debut in 2021. And while this year's holiday special may also come with some sadness, the return of key character Captain Jack Harkness should put a smile on the face of many in the near future.
That's right, John Barrowman will return to Doctor Who in the holiday special "Revolution of the Daleks," and it sounds like this return will be more fleshed-out than his most recent one. BBC America announced the casting with a short little teaser video of Jack in action. Check out the "Face of Bo" below, and continue reading for a bit more on what we know of the situation.
Doctor Who fans who watched Season 12 will remember this special marks the second time we've seen Captain Jack in recent memory. John Barrowman's character made a brief appearance in the episode "Fugitive of the Judoon," though was not seen again throughout the rest of the season. Jack's return in "Revolution of the Daleks" will presumably be to help The Doctor and/or her companions in their fight against a Dalek menace.
When Doctor Who last showed Captain Jack, he relayed a few messages to The Doctor's companions about things that she should be on the lookout for. This included "The Lone Cyberman" that we met later in the season, along with talk of a mysterious alliance. Unfortunately, Jack and The Doctor never met face-to-face to talk the whole thing out, though there's a chance this mysterious alliance will be expanded on when "Revolution of the Daleks" arrives.
This upcoming Doctor Who appearance will mark the second return for John Barrowman following a ten-year absence from the series. As a fan, I'm hoping this ultimately leads to an arc where Jack tags along with the "fam" for a bit, especially after the rumors that Tosin Cole (Ryan) and Bradley Walsh (Graham) will be written off in the holiday special. A couple more Captain Jack adventures with The Doctor would certainly soften that potential blow while possibly making for a smoother transition into Season 13. As of this writing, we're only aware of Barrowman's involvement in the holiday special, though it's worth noting his initial return in Season 12 was not promoted ahead of the cameo.
Doctor Who's "Revolution of The Daleks" will air soon on BBC America, though the network still has not revealed whether the episode will run on Christmas, New Year's Day, or another date.
