HBO is putting together another high profile project, and this time around, Dwayne Johnson is attached to star. Following the success of Pain & Gain at the box office, Johnson has signed on to star in the untitled half-hour dramedy about retired athletes living in Miami.
HBO has signed on to produce a pilot for the project, which also marks a brand new team-up between Johnson and Mark Wahlberg, who co-starred together in the aforementioned Pain & Gain. Wahlberg won’t be starring in the project, however. Instead, he’ll be teaming up with Entourage producer Stephen Levinson to executive produce, alongside Johnson, Dany Garcia and Peter Berg. According to THR, Levinson will write the pilot for the untitled project.
Johnson’s been pretty busy making a name for himself in the theatrical world, while still hopping back into his The Rock persona on occasion to perform at WWE events. He’s probably most famous for roles in The Scorpion King and The Fast and The Furious franchise, but if this pilot moves to series, it will be the first time Johnson will have a regular, small screen television role.
Clearly, this project is still in the early stages. Currently, the pilot has no showrunner, no title, and no other actors signed on. As Johnson is pretty popular with fans and critics alike and Wahlberg and Levinson have brought numerous projects (some of which brought big ratings) to the network before, I’m really rooting for this one to move forward at HBO. All we really know is that Johnson will be using his sports prowess to play an athlete or former athlete. We’ll keep you updated as this one moves forward through the pilot process.
