MTV Chases Tequila With Amore

It was bound to happen after MTV struck gold with their dating show, A Shot At Love With Tila Tequila. Much like with sister-station VH-1’s I Love New York and its predecessor, Flavor of Love, people can’t get enough of watching young model-types fight over D-List celebs they shouldn’t be dating in the first place. So MTV has announced that it will launch a spin-off of the Tequila show called That’s Amore starting on March 2nd.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the new series will have six-hour long episodes and the obligatory “reunion” show and will feature former Shot contestant Domenico Nesci, who was born in Milan. He will be choosing the girl he’ll pretend fall in love with from 15 contestants, and part of the competition will include a visit to Italy to visit his mother (you think it’s hard to impress New York’s mother? Try an actual old-school Italian mom).

MTV is looking to capitalize on the huge success of A Shot At Love. The bi-sexual dating show, which had one of the most intense cat-fights in reality show history, was one of the highest-rated shows on the formerly music-centric channel, and the show’s finale was the 2nd highest rated show on the network behind the Britney-fueled Video Music Awards.

MTV is smart because as long as these fake dating shows are on the air, there will always be a supply of contestants to base the next series on. The only problem is now no one on the shows will eventually be trying for the date, but will be auditioning for the eventual spin-off. But I guess that’s not really the point. The point is more naked hot tubs, more fist-fights over men and women that just met a week ago, and people crying over their washed-up (or in Tila Tequila’s case, “who’s she?”) “soulmates.”

I can’t wait to see the competitions on That’s Amore which will determine who wins the heart of Domenico. I’m sure, since they’ll have to show that they appreciate his Italian heritage, as well as his mother, they’ll probably have too cook up a feast of epic proportions. And it’s there will find the next sure-fire, fake-date queen: Just look for The Girl Who Can’t Boil Water. It’s money in MTV’s bank.
