It’s still August, and with the summer heat still bearing down on many of us across the country, it seems a little early to be thinking about Mad Men. AMC’s critically acclaimed series isn’t expected to return for its seventh and final season until 2014, but as it turns out, fans will be able to catch up on Season 6 episodes much sooner. The Emmy-nominated Mad Men: Season 6 will hit Blu-ray, DVD, and digital download on November 5, 2013.
Lionsgate Home Entertainment has always chosen graphic cover art for the Mad Men releases, and this season follows suite. The new cover art gives us a good look at an illustrated Don Draper, which somehow makes Draper look even older than usual, convincingly showing us that while Draper is getting older, the series is ageing, too. That’s probably not the advertising motif the cover art is meant to show, but as the series moves ever closer to its final run on AMC, it’s one of the only things I can think about.
Season 6 features a lot of interesting of interesting storylines, from affairs to new advertising accounts, and even Peggy wearing pants to work. This all led into a special finale episode that featured some truths from Draper’s past coming to the forefront, as well as numerous other revelations. The finale made headlines for the way the Hershey’s account in the episode was handled, and was also a ratings winner for the series, pulling in the best ratings the show has brought in during the history of the show. Mad Men has never been a huge program for AMC, but it does have a loyal audience, and it's that audience the Blu-ray and DVD sets are geared to, although now is also a good time to catch up on the series if you want to get invested before the final episodes air next year.
Fans can relive those moments starting this November. Lionsgate has put together a 3-Disc Blu-ray set and a 4-Disc DVD set that offers all 13 Season 6 episodes of the series, as well as a variety of featurettes. The “Summer of Love Archives” will only be available via Blu-ray copies, but otherwise, DVD copies and Blu-ray copies will both feature the same extras. Deciding which copy to purchase should be easy if you already own a Blu-ray player, as Blu-ray copies of the season list at $49.97 and DVD copies list at $49.98. There are still a few months before Season 6 will be available for purchase, but Amazon already has the sets available for pre-order. You can check out the full list of extras, below, and decide whether Season 6 is worth owning.
