If there’s one thing we can always seem to count on, it’s that The Walking Dead will never stopping breaking new ground and upping the stakes in its never-ending zombie war. Over the course of the last six years the show has become one of the largest, and most technically involved shows on TV. The Season 6 premiere more than proved this, as we saw a record-breaking number of walkers stumbling through the backwoods of Alexandria, Virginia. However, according to Greg Nicotero: that was nothing. In fact, he explained that audiences should expect to see an unprecedented number of walkers during the next episode:
The record that we had established in Episode 1 of Season 6 will already be broken in this episode in regards to the number of walkers and the number of kills. It’s the action movie version of The Walking Dead. With reshoots and with additional photography and things, I think we were over 1,300 walkers for episode.

The Walking Dead has steadily upped the stakes with each and every passing season, so it doesn't exactly surprise us that Greg Nicotero – director of the coming midseason premiere – revealed such exciting information to EW. During the show’s initial years, a few walkers in a forest represented something terrifying for our characters. As the survivors have become more seasoned at the sacred art of zombie slaying – and as audiences have become more callous to the carnage – the show has had to steadily increase the scope and scale of the walker threat. Considering just how intense the walker threat will soon become, we have to begin to wonder whether or not some of our favorite characters will soon bite the dust. No matter what, someone’s going to die; that’s just how things work in the world of The Walking Dead.

At the current moment nothing seems to be going right for any of our heroes on the AMC horror series; the entire colony of Alexandria is under siege, and all of the characters are scattered. Due to these dire circumstances, no character will be able to sit back and relax during the events of the midseason premiere, which means that the entire episode should be a fight for survival.

We will just have to wait and see for ourselves what 1,300 walkers truly look like on camera. The Walking Dead gore-filled midseason premiere will air on AMC this Sunday at 9 PM EST; make sure to curl up with your valentine and watch the carnage unfold.
