What Doctor Who Will Bring Back

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Doctor Who, you probably know that the Twelfth Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, swapped out his sonic screwdriver for some sonic sunglasses during an early episode. There has been some backlash against the sunglasses in the weeks since, but recently showrunner Steven Moffat revealed that the sonic screwdriver will make a comeback on the popular BBC show.

As to whether or not we’ll see the sonic screwdriver again, of course we will!... The screwdriver will be back. We’re just messing about and having some fun. Surely that’s allowed.

This isn’t the first time the show has written out the sonic screwdriver and, presuming Doctor Who stays on the air for years and years to come, it’s unlikely to be the last. In fact, the sonic screwdriver was written out during the Fifth Doctor’s tenure, leaving the next few Doctors without the handy piece of technology. Obviously, we don’t know if Moffat initially expected that people would dislike the new wearable technology when the sonic sunglasses were written in, but now that people don’t seem to be huge fans of the change for Season 9, it’s at least easy to see why he’s confirming the screwdriver will eventually make its triumphant return. Unfortunately, he’s not being clear about saying exactly when the return to the screwdriver will happen.

In an interview with The Observer Moffat also spoke out about the backlash against the sunglasses, noting the show is having some fun.

Every kid whose parents don’t want to run the expense of a toy, they just have to go get some sunglasses. Even more importantly, every celebrity tosser who thinks they’re looking cool because they’re wearing sunglasses is now cosplaying as Doctor Who. It tricks pomposity, it confers magic on an everyday household object, and it turns an eye defect into a superpower. How much more Doctor Who do you get?

While that seems like a bit of an over-the-top explanation, the explanation also serves to note that the show was just doing something goofy when the concept was initially conceived and now the show is trying to get people on board. Not everyone hates the sonic sunglasses. Because Doctor Who has placed the Doctor in situations without his screwdriver in the past, some people have been staunch defenders of the device and what it could mean for a certain plotline between the Doctor and River Song, who will be returning to the show. Whether you love or hate the glasses it looks like the sonic screwdriver will be making its return. You can tune in to find out when Doctor Who airs at 9 p.m. ET on BBC America in the States.
