Hard Candy Synopsis
A smart, charming teenage girl, Hayley probably shouldn’t be going to a local coffee shop to meet Jeff, a 30-something fashion photographer she met on the Internet. But Hayley’s ready to have fun, and soon she’s mixing screwdrivers at Jeff’s place and stripping for an impromptu photo shoot. It’s Jeff’s lucky night – until his vision blurs and he passes out.
Turns out Hayley isn’t as innocent as she looks after all. In fact, she has a lot on her mind. Like getting Jeff to confess to his penchant for teenage girls – and to what he did to Donna Mauer, the girl who disappeared from Jeff’s favorite coffee shop.
When Jeff awakens, he’s tied to a chair. If he doesn’t cooperate, Hayley has something to help him along--a little surgical procedure she picked up on the Internet. All she needs is an ice pack. And a knife...
The trailer plays like a cross between One Hour Photo and The Woodsman, but maybe Hard Candy has more in common with Old Boy than either of those films. Ultimately, it looks like a sort of not-quite-legal girl’s revenge flick, in which the predator becomes the prey for a determined girl bent on getting information out of a twisted pedophile. Something to cheer for.
What can I say, I like it. It’s a cool idea for a movie. Uncomfortable subject matter, but it’s always satisfying to see a pedophile get his. Hopefully he survives her torture so he can go on and become some nice man’s girlfriend in prison. Out of the frying pan and into the big man.
This isn’t David Slade’s first film, but it’s the first one I’ve heard of. If you travel in those circles, you probably know more about him than I do. The only “name” in the film is Sandra Oh, who has quietly wormed her way into nearly every television show and movie since her appearance in Under the Tuscan Sun. Oh, she was in Sideways? Alright, maybe that was what did it for her. I still say her best work was in Dancing at the Blue Iguana.
