Paramount still hasn’t released any details about Cloverfield coming out to DVD. No release date. No announced extras. Nothing. It’s incredibly frustrating for someone like me who is anxious to see the movie again, but only had time to see it once in theaters.
Despite the silence on Paramount’s part, news still seems to be leaking out about Cloverfield’s release, no doubt with the same accuracy and insight most people had about the movie itself, which is to say not much. Still, half of the Cloverfield experience has been speculation and curiosity, so it’s fun to see what’s out there.
The image to the right came out courtesy of Can Mag (found through JoBlo), who suggest this is the package art for the eventual DVD. I don’t know if it is or not, but it certainly continues the feel of the Cloverfield footage being “real” and is exactly the type of packaging I was hoping for. No cover art or fancy hero shots. Instead we just get a battered container that carries a movie that is recovered footage. Fantastic.
I hope this is the real thing, but I fear Paramount won’t go for this, instead trying to promote a cover package that consumers will recognize and associate with J.J. Abrams name. This is definitely artwork for an audience that already knows what Cloverfield is, but it’s probably not going to encourage anyone new to check out the movie.
