Following 20+ years on the air, the only country music station in Los Angeles has been dumped like a jealous ex-girlfriend. The radio destination for country fans, KZLA-FM, abruptly left airwaves and got replaced by a pop station called Movin’ 93.9. To add insult to injury, the new line-up features artists like Jennifer Lopez.

According to Yahoo Music, the response from fans has been far from pleasant. Says Shawn Parr, host of the mid-morning show, "It's a bitter pill to swallow. The thing I have a hard time with is the listeners. They deserve more than that. I went to my e-mail 3 1/2 hours later and I had 2,100 e-mails. My phone has not stopped ringing for 24 hours."

After learning of the swift musical switch, he played Keith Urban's "Tonight I Wanna Cry", followed by the Black Eyed Peas' "Let's Get It Started", and then left the air. Val Maki, vice president of Emmis Communications' radio division, said the change was a "better business decision despite what a wonderful station KZLA was." She explained that the new station will target a new demographic (women between 25 amd 54), and hopefully raise their numbers. In order to get it on the right track, she hired L.A. DJ Rick Dees to run the morning show after Labor Day.

While it may be a sad day for country aficionados in the City of Dreams, they can still listen to their preferred music on KZLA's streaming Internet or on HD Radio. Or they can sell out and listen to yet another pop music station created for the sole purpose of making money. Whatever works.
