Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night

Delays happen all the time for all sorts of games for a number of different reasons. For Kickstarters it's a little bit different because they're funded by the actual gaming community, not big corporate backers. So when a Kickstarter gets delayed gamers get nervous, and just recently another Kickstarter darling, in the form of Bloodstained, was delayed.

The news comes via an update over on the Kickstarter page for Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night, with creator Koji Igarashi -- best known for his work on Castlevania games -- explaining to fans that the Castlevania successor is being pushed back by a year...

The last thing I want to do is keep our backers waiting, but after receiving such incredible support, I feel responsible for delivering the best product I possibly can. Again, I offer my sincerest apologies.

Originally Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night was scheduled to release in 2017 for home consoles and PC, but now the game is being bumped all the way back to early 2018. It's a fairly significant delay, mostly due to the team wanting to meet "quality standards".

In a short minute and a half long Kickstarter update video, Igarashi explains that with their current setup they won't meet the expected 2017 deadline, so he decided to add a new development to the main production of the game in hopes of improving their approach to development.

Many of the backers are supportive of the delay, as they feel it fits in line with legendary developer Shigeru Miyamoto's maxim that delayed games eventually turn out good. However, some countered that claim by bringing up the fact that Keiji Inafune's Mighty No. 9 was also delayed for well over a year and actually turned out to be lower in quality than the concept demo that Comcept put together within the span of a week.

It certainly takes a special kind of mismanagement to make the final game worse than a demo that was quickly put together in a week.

Mighty No. 9 isn't the only Kickstarter that has run into trouble. There has been a smorgasbord of failed crowd-funded projects, seemingly coming from the more high-profile projects with hundreds of thousands of dollars on the line. Cheat Sheet did a quick list of some of the more promising Kickstarters that either didn't deliver or failed to live up to what they promised. In one particular case, the FTC had to get involved after a creator tried to take off with the funds, as reported by Fast Company.

Now, this isn't to say that Bloodstained is a scam or even imply as much, but it is to say that some high-profile crowd-funded projects haven't had the best records as of late when it comes to delivering on time or delivering what was promised. Of course, in this particular case, Igarashi wants to make a quality product, so the delay is to improve the game. Ultimately, if it turns out to be true that the delay was necessary to make the game better, then there's absolutely nothing wrong with that.

Hopefully, Bloodstained doesn't turn out like Mighty No. 9 where it was perpetually delayed and managed to get worse with each delay.
